Tengboche Monastery at 3,860m is the most important monastery in the Khumbu region - set against a backdrop of Ama Dablam (6,812m), Everest and Lhotse.
The monastery is a working religious institution. Morning and evening puja ceremonies are open to trekkers - the sound of horns and drums echoing through the mountain silence is one of the defining sounds of the EBC trek.
Ama Dablam (6,812m) is considered by many mountaineers to be the most beautiful mountain in the world. Its distinctive double-summit profile is visible from almost every point on the trek above Namche.
It follows you up the valley - always present, always changing in light and angle. Most EBC trekkers end up with more photographs of Ama Dablam than of Everest itself.
The Khumbu region is the homeland of the Sherpa people, arguably the most accomplished mountain community in human history.

Reserved for weather delays on Lukla flights. Lukla flights are frequently delayed or cancelled due to fog and cloud - especially in spring. This buffer day is not optional, it is a real operational necessity. Do not book international flights on Day 13.
The Everest Base Camp route climbs gradually from Kathmandu to Kala Patthar, then descends back to Lukla and Kathmandu.
Two acclimatization days are built into this itinerary. They are not optional rest days - they are medically essential for safe altitude gain on this trek. Do not attempt to skip them.

You need to be in good cardiovascular fitness. Daily training for 6-8 weeks before departure - hiking, running or stair climbing is strongly recommended. The trek itself takes care of altitude fitness through acclimatization days. Poor cardiovascular fitness is the most common reason trekkers struggle or fail to complete EBC.
Yes, non-negotiable. Emergency helicopter evacuation from above 4,000m costs USD 3,000-8,000. Your insurance must cover helicopter rescue above 5,000m, medical evacuation and repatriation. We require insurance documentation before confirming your trek above Namche.

Our standard package is 12-14 days including two acclimatization days and one buffer day. Shorter itineraries exist but are not recommended - acclimatization cannot be rushed safely.
Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla has a short runway that drops steeply at one end. The flight from Kathmandu takes approximately 35-40 minutes. The approach and landing are dramatic - many travelers call it one of the most thrilling flying experiences of their lives. Flights are frequently delayed by weather. Early morning slots have the best success rates.
Technically possible but not advisable. EBC reaches 5,545m - prior experience at altitude above 3,500m gives you a realistic understanding of how your body responds. We strongly recommend completing a shorter high altitude trek before attempting EBC.
The Thukla Memorial is a collection of cairns and memorial plaques on the ridge above Thukla Pass dedicated to climbers who lost their lives on Everest and other Himalayan peaks. Passing through it is one of the most moving moments of the entire trek - a reminder of the mountain's power and the courage of those who attempt its summit.
