WHY MUKTINATH

Muktinath Tour Highlights ~ A Sacred Journey Through the Mustang Landscape

A sacred Himalayan road journey through Muktinath Temple, Kagbeni, Dhumba Lake, Marpha Village, Kali Gandaki Gorge and Pokhara.

01 Muktinath Temple ~ Sacred to Hindus and Buddhists

Muktinath is one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in South Asia, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists across Nepal, India and Tibet.

The temple sits at 3,710m in the Mustang district. 108 waterspouts surround the main shrine and the nearby Jwala Mai Temple burns with an eternal flame fed by underground natural gas.

The peaceful surroundings, colourful prayer flags and breathtaking mountain backdrop make Muktinath one of Nepal's most memorable spiritual destinations.

For a pilgrimage-focused Muktinath experience with deeper spiritual preparation and puja arrangements, see our Muktinath Darshan package.

02 Kagbeni ~ The Medieval Gateway Village

Kagbeni sits at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers, a dramatically situated medieval village of flat-roofed mud-brick houses and a large red-painted Buddhist monastery.

This is the last village before the Upper Mustang restricted area begins. Even without entering Upper Mustang, Kagbeni alone is worth the journey.Take time to wander its narrow alleys, traditional homes and monastery to experience one of Mustang's oldest surviving settlements.

03 Dhumba Lake ~ Serene Alpine Water

Just outside Jomsom lies Dhumba Lake - a peaceful alpine lake reflecting the surrounding barren Mustang hills.

A short walk from the main road, it is a beautiful and tranquil stop on the tour, the kind of place that makes you want to sit quietly for a while.

04 Marpha Village ~ Apple Capital of Nepal

On the return journey, Marpha is a highlight that surprises every first-time visitor.

A perfectly preserved Thakali village with cobbled lanes, whitewashed walls and wooden balconies, Marpha is famous throughout Nepal for apple brandy, apple cider and apple jam.

Don't miss the opportunity to sample Marpha's famous apple cider, dried apples and locally produced apple brandy before continuing your journey.

05 Kali Gandaki Gorge ~ A Drive Unlike Any Other

The road from Beni northward follows the Kali Gandaki river, running through one of the world's deepest gorges.

The landscape changes completely as you gain altitude - from green forested hills near Beni to dry canyon walls and the high desert plateau of Mustang.

Rupse Waterfall, river crossings, ancient mani walls and the towering peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri above, the spectacular drive through the Kali Gandaki Gorge is one of the highlights of the entire Muktinath journey.

06 Pokhara ~ Lakeside Finish to the Journey

The Muktinath tour ends in Pokhara, Nepal's second largest city and the gateway to the Annapurna region.

The return route passes through Tatopani hot springs, Galeshwor Mahadev Temple and arrives at Phewa Lakeside. Day 4 includes Bindabasini Temple, Pumdikot Mahadev and optional Phewa Lake boat ride.

SUMMER - GOOD

June ~ August

Mustang is largely rain shadow, making it drier than the rest of Nepal.
