WHY UPPER MUSTANG

Upper Mustang Tour Highlights ~ What Awaits You in the Forbidden Kingdom

Ancient walled cities, sacred temples, Buddhist monasteries, red canyon landscapes, Mustang villages and one of Nepal’s greatest road journeys.

01 Lo Manthang - The Ancient Walled Capital

Lo Manthang is the ancient walled capital of the Kingdom of Mustang, a city that has remained largely unchanged for over 600 years.

Surrounded by a whitewashed wall with a single entrance gate, Lo Manthang contains the Royal Palace, four major Buddhist monasteries, ancient cave paintings and a living community of Loba people whose culture is closely related to that of Tibet.

Upper Mustang remained restricted to outsiders until the early 1990s. Even today it requires a special restricted area permit. The sense of entering a genuinely different world is immediate and powerful.

02 Muktinath Temple - Sacred at 3,710m

Every Upper Mustang tour includes a visit to Muktinath Temple, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists in the world.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. 108 waterspouts surround the main shrine, and bathing in all 108 is believed to grant moksha.

The nearby Jwala Mai Temple burns with an eternal flame fed by underground natural gas - a phenomenon that has never been extinguished. See our Muktinath Darshan page.

03 Chhosar Caves and Nepal-China Border

Near Lo Manthang lie the Chhosar Caves, ancient man-made cave dwellings carved into the dramatic red canyon walls thousands of years ago.

Their purpose remains partially mysterious - some were used as meditation retreats, others as grain storage or burial sites.

Beyond the caves, the road continues to the Nepal-China Korala Border viewpoint, the northern edge of Nepal, where the high plateau of Tibet begins.

04 The Mustang Jeep Track - One of Nepal's Great Road Journeys

The drive from Beni to Lo Manthang is one of the most dramatic road journeys in Nepal.

The route follows the Kali Gandaki river gorge, one of the world's deepest gorges, northward through a landscape that transforms completely as you gain altitude.

Red and ochre canyon walls, high desert plateaus, prayer flag-strung villages, ancient irrigation channels and the permanent snow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges make the journey itself a major part of the experience.

05 Kagbeni - Gateway to Upper Mustang

Kagbeni is the last village before the restricted area begins. Medieval in appearance, with flat-roofed mud-brick houses and a striking Buddhist monastery, Kagbeni sits at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers.

It is the point where the landscape changes dramatically. North of Kagbeni, the terrain becomes arid and otherworldly.

06 Marpha Village and the Apple Capital

On the return journey, Marpha is a must-stop. Famous throughout Nepal for its apple orchards, Marpha produces apple brandy, apple cider and apple jam that are sold throughout the country.

The village is beautifully preserved, with narrow cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses and a charming central monastery, making it one of the most photogenic villages on any Nepal tour.

Pilgrimage Travelers

Muktinath Temple darshan is a central highlight with deep Hindu and Buddhist significance.

Adventure Road Trippers

The Mustang jeep track is a bucket-list drive — raw, dramatic and unforgettable.

WHEN TO GO

Best Time for Upper Mustang Tour ~ The Rain Shadow Advantage

Upper Mustang has one of the most unique climate advantages of any Nepal destination - it lies in a rain shadow area created by the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. This means it receives very little monsoon rainfall and can be visited almost year round.

SPRING - EXCELLENT

March - May

Clear skies, pleasant temperature and Lo Manthang festival season.

SUMMER - UNIQUE

June - August

Most Nepal routes are affected by monsoon, but Mustang remains clear and dry.

AUTUMN - IDEAL

September - November

Best visibility, comfortable temperature and post-harvest season.

WINTER - POSSIBLE

December - February

Cold at altitude, some roads may be difficult and there are fewer travelers.

Rain Shadow Region

Upper Mustang stays much drier than most Nepal destinations because it sits behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Best Monsoon Destination

Summer is one of the best times to visit Upper Mustang because while the rest of Nepal is wet and cloudy, Mustang remains dry and clear.

Almost Year Round

March to November is the strongest travel window. Winter is possible, but cold weather and road conditions need extra planning.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions ~ Upper Mustang Tour Package

Common questions about permits, package duration, transport, monsoon travel, elderly travelers, ATMs, hotels and the difference between Muktinath Tour and Upper Mustang.

Do I need a special permit for Upper Mustang?

Yes. Upper Mustang requires a restricted area permit in addition to the standard ACAP permit. We arrange all permits - bring valid citizenship cards or passport and passport size photos.

Which package duration is most popular?

The 4 Nights 5 Days package is our most popular option. It covers the complete route from Kathmandu including Lo Manthang, Muktinath, Marpha and Pokhara sightseeing.

Which transport should I choose — Jeep or Bus?

For the full Upper Mustang experience including Lo Manthang, the Scorpio 4WD Jeep is strongly recommended. The road beyond Kagbeni to Lo Manthang is a rough mountain track that requires 4WD capability. The bus is suitable for the Muktinath section but cannot reach Lo Manthang.

Can I visit Upper Mustang during monsoon?

Yes. Upper Mustang is one of the only Nepal destinations that is excellent during monsoon, June-August, because it lies in a rain shadow area. While the rest of Nepal is wet, Mustang remains dry and clear.

Is Upper Mustang suitable for elderly travelers?

Yes. The tour is vehicle-based with no strenuous trekking. Short walks are involved at Muktinath and Lo Manthang but nothing that requires significant fitness. Horse and doli are available at Muktinath for elderly travelers who need assistance.

Are there ATMs in Upper Mustang?

ATMs are available in Jomsom but not beyond. Carry sufficient NPR cash before leaving Jomsom. There are no card payment facilities in Chhusang, Lo Manthang or along the route.

What is included in the hotel accommodation?

How is the Muktinath Tour different from Upper Mustang?

The Muktinath Tour focuses on the pilgrimage route — Muktinath Temple, Kagbeni, Marpha and Pokhara. It does not go to Lo Manthang or the restricted area. The Upper Mustang Tour covers all of this plus Lo Manthang, Chhosar Caves and the China border viewpoint.
