WHY WATERFALLS IN MONSOON

Waterfall Hikes ~ Kathmandu's Best Monsoon Season Destinations

Most of Nepal's trekking and hiking destinations lose their appeal in monsoon - trails turn slippery, mountain views disappear behind cloud cover, and the usual Himalayan panoramas become hit or miss. Waterfalls are the exception.

Unlike mountain viewpoints that often disappear behind monsoon clouds, waterfalls become more dramatic and beautiful during this season, making them one of Nepal's best rainy-season adventures.

June through September is when Nepal's waterfalls are at their absolute best, full monsoon rainfall feeding rivers and streams into powerful, dramatic flows that simply don't exist the rest of the year. While other day trips struggle in this season, waterfall hikes thrive in it.

Lalitpur Holidays operates day trips to five waterfall destinations near Kathmandu - Lauke Jharna, Mohini Jharna, Mailung Jharna, Tindhare Jharna and Dhap Dam. Each offers a different character, distance and difficulty, choose the one that fits your group and schedule.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions ~ Waterfall Hikes Near Kathmandu

Which waterfall should I choose?

Lauke Jharna and Tindhare Jharna are good for first-time visitors and families, easier access and shorter drive. Mohini Jharna and Mailung Jharna suit travelers wanting a quieter or more remote experience. Dhap Dam offers a different, more open landscape with a reservoir setting. WhatsApp us and we'll recommend based on your group and preferences.

Are these waterfalls only worth visiting in monsoon?

Monsoon (June-September) is by far the best season, full water flow and dramatic cascades. Outside monsoon most of these waterfalls reduce significantly, sometimes to a modest trickle. We recommend booking during monsoon for the full experience.

Is it safe to swim or wade in the waterfall pools?

Wading is possible at some sites but entirely at own risk, there is no lifeguard service. Water can be powerful during peak monsoon flow. Children must be supervised at all times. We advise caution and recommend staying in shallow, calm areas only.

Can I book a different waterfall each visit?

Yes. Many of our repeat customers visit a different waterfall destination each monsoon season. WhatsApp us to check what we recommend if you've already done one or more of the five.

Is transport different for each waterfall?

Yes, drive time and recommended transport (Jeep or Bus) vary by destination. We confirm the specific transport and route when you choose your waterfall.

Can I combine a waterfall hike with another destination?

Some combinations are possible depending on location, for example Mailung Jharna is along the route toward Rasuwa and Langtang. WhatsApp us to discuss a custom combined itinerary.
